Cocaine And Other Nasty Drugs/Chemicals Found In This Popular Health Food

Do you want to eat food with cocaine in it?

Unless you're a drug cartel kingpin, the answer is probably "No." Even then, I'd suspect you'd probably want to refrain from eating these foods because of what else was found in them.

While I recommend eating wild-caught salmon as often as possible due to the numerous health benefits associated with its consumption, it looks like I might want to walk back my recommendation a little bit.

That is, if your version of wild-caught salmon comes from the Puget Sound...

A study of salmon caught in the Puget Sound off the coast of Seattle reveals these fish are absolutely loaded with dangerous chemicals and drugs.

As reported by The Seattle Times:

"Puget Sound salmon are on drugs — Prozac, Advil, Benadryl, Lipitor, even cocaine.

Those drugs and dozens of others are showing up in the tissues of juvenile chinook, researchers have found, thanks to tainted wastewater discharge.

...
The medicine chest of common drugs also included Flonase, Aleve and Tylenol. Paxil, Valium and Zoloft. Tagamet, OxyContin and Darvon. Nicotine and caffeine. Fungicides, antiseptics and anticoagulants. And Cipro and other antibiotics galore.

"Why are the levels so high? It could be because people here use more of the drugs detected, or it could be related to wastewater-treatment plants' processes, said Jim Meador, an environmental toxicologist at NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle and lead author on a paper published this week in the journal Environmental Pollution."

So what's the problem? Why are the salmon off the coast of the Puget Sound filled up with these problematic chemicals?

It likely has to do with two factors:

One is the fact, despite their best attempts, industrial polluters just aren't up to the task of getting their wastewater that clean.

The other problem is the bigger issue, and one we all need to fight.

The truth is our world and our nation are increasingly dependent on medicines and chemicals we don't need.

Think about it this way: part of the reason drugs like the ones mentioned above even appear in fish meat is because our society has an unhealthy dependence on these kinds of drugs.

I'm not saying all pharmaceuticals are bad. I believe many of them have their value and their place in medical protocol.

However, I think it's important to note the larger problem with our society - its reliance on "popping a pill" to fix everything in an instant. These kinds of dependencies are what cause an overabundance of pharmaceuticals in city water and, correspondingly, in our water supply.

This is why we strive to resolve health problems at the root, as opposed to trying to mask them with drugs.

Now, backtracking a little bit, I'm sure you're wondering how this might affect your salmon buying habits, right?

My suggestion is to get wild-caught salmon coming off the coast of the upper Pacific Northwest. This would be Alaska, Canada, etc.

There the salmon are less likely to come into contact with concentrated wastewater supplies. This'll make them healthier and will help eliminate your need to worry about how eating these wild-caught salmon will expose you to drugs and chemicals you'd rather not have in your body.
