How This Essential Vitamin Might Make You Strong (Like Superman?)
If you were to ask me or any of the physicians I work with what we consider to be one of the most important vitamins on the planet, we'd all agree vitamin D3 is in the top 5.
There isn't just one reason why vitamin D3 is so important; however, one of the most essential reasons is how D3 boosts bone and immune health.
Generally, when I recommend vitamin D3 to patients, it's related to those areas of health.
However, a new study shows we might be seriously underestimating the strength of vitamin D3.
In fact, vitamin D3 might directly influence muscle mass and strength...meaning if you're deficient in D3, it might actually make you weak!
Let me show you how this works...
Vitamin D3 Won't Make You As Strong As Superman...
But It Might Make You Stronger
When vitamin D arrives in the body (whether in D2 or D3 form), it is inactive until enzymatic processes transform it into its active and useable form.
One of the ways we test to find out if you're D3 deficient is measuring inactive vitamin D in your blood. The more inactive your vitamin D, the likelier it is you're deficient.
In a recent study, scientists wished to see exactly how vitamin D3 influenced muscle mass and strength.
They selected 116 healthy participants between the ages of 20 and 74, split them into two groups, and analyzed their levels of inactive vitamin D.
The first group were women who had lower levels of body fat and higher levels of lean muscle mass. When analyzing them, they noticed these women were much more likely to have active vitamin D in their system than their counterparts.
Conversely, the second group, which was made up of women with higher levels of body fat, was more likely to have far greater levels of inactive vitamin D in their blood.
This research led them to a startling conclusion...
These scientists realized getting optimal levels of vitamin D actually makes you stronger.
Of course, they made no determinations on what active levels of vitamin D did to body fat...so please don't come away concluding vitamin D will help you cut body fat.
However, here's what the scientists wrote:
Dr. Hassan-Smith explains the findings, which echo previous studies that have suggested a link between a lack of muscle mass and low vitamin D levels:
"By looking at multiple forms in the same study, we can say that it is a more complex relationship that previously thought. It may be that body fat is linked to increased levels of inactive vitamin D, but lean mass is the key for elevated levels of active vitamin D. It is vital to understand the complete picture, and the causal mechanisms at work, so we can learn how to supplement vitamin D intake to enhance muscle strength."
I encourage you to try to get as much vitamin D3 as you can.
I also encourage you to get D3 over D2; that's because D3 is easier to absorb, and is easier for your body to use to improve its health.
The sun is certainly your best natural source for getting vitamin D3. But, if you're like most Americans and are shut inside most of the day, you could certainly benefit from a D3 supplement like the one we carry in our store.
It looks like our D3 supplement could really "pack a punch," and research suggests it could even make you stronger in the process.
We make our own Vitamin D3, it's super potent and is available at a great price.
