How the Air Inside and Outside Your Home Affects Your Health

Air is everywhere. We breathe it in and out all day long without giving it much thought, yet the quality of the air around us can have a significant impact on our health.

Air pollution is also something we may seldom think about.

The truth is, what’s mixed into the air we breathe can really impact our health.

The fine particles mixed into our air, whether they're smoke, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile chemicals, pollen, or biological material such as mold spores, can have a major impact on our health.

These particles can come from anything. Some are pollutants that come from traffic, industry, and wildfires. 

Others are produced inside the home by cooking, smoking, candles, fireplaces, cleaning products, dampness, and poorly vented appliances.

Today, we're going to examine how the air you breathe can impact your health—and, more importantly, what you can do to reduce that impact. I think you’ll learn quite a bit.

How the Air We Breathe Can Wreck Your Health

As I write this in late July 2026, Canadian wildfires are making the issue hard to ignore. 

NOAA satellite tracking shows smoke from fires concentrated in the Northwest Territories and southern British Columbia spreading across several Canadian provinces and drifting into parts of the Midwest and Southeast United States.

A person doesn’t have to live near the flames to be exposed.

When I think about air quality and/or air pollution, I tend to think of it as an input that can have wide-ranging effects.

The truth is, air pollution can be a major contributor to a person’s overall inflammatory load. It’s rarely the only reason someone develops asthma, headaches, fatigue, or cardiovascular disease.

But when the air repeatedly irritates the lungs and stresses the body’s repair systems, it can become one more burden…sometimes the burden that tips symptoms in the wrong direction.

The main health concern right now is wildfire smoke. It can become a problem when the air is loaded with PM2.5 particles, which are tiny (not larger than 2.5 micrometers).

The problem is that since they’re so small, they can travel deep into the lungs. These tiny particles are like miniature wrecking balls that wreak havoc on your system.

The issue is that when they invade, the body responds as it would to other irritants by activating inflammation and oxidative stress.

That response can manifest in

  • Coughing

  • Wheezing, 

  • Eye and throat irritation

  • Headaches

  • Shortness of breath

Even worse, in susceptible people, smoke exposure may trigger asthma attacks, COPD flares, heart failure exacerbations, and other urgent problems.

The strongest evidence doesn’t show that one smoky afternoon permanently damages every healthy person. That being said, it does indicate a person’s risk generally rises with the amount and duration of exposure.

Children, pregnant people, older adults, outdoor workers, and those with lung or cardiovascular disease are more likely to experience serious effects. The EPA’s 2026 wildfire guide summarizes evidence connecting short-term PM2.5 exposure with problems ranging from airway irritation to worsening asthma, heart failure, and premature death. 

While wildfire smoke often dominates the headlines, air pollution can affect your health throughout the year. Consider this: an observational study following nearly 61 million Medicare beneficiaries found that long-term PM2.5 exposure was associated with higher mortality, including at concentrations below the national standards in place at the time.

An observational study can’t prove what will happen to any one individual, but research this large makes cleaner air a serious public health issue. 

Don’t Believe That Going Inside Will Prevent This From Happening

Going inside during heavy smoke is usually the right first move.

I think we all kinda get that…

Still, houses aren’t sealed bubbles.

Because they’re so small, outdoor particles enter through doors, windows, ventilation systems, and small gaps in the building.

Once indoors, they mix with pollutants produced by everyday activities. And there are a lot of those.

For instance, cooking, especially frying, grilling, or burning food, creates a large amount of particulate matter. Tobacco smoke, vaping, candles, incense, wood-burning fireplaces, unvented heaters, and some cleaning activities contribute as well.

A home can look clean and still have poor air. That might be a bummer to read, but there are ways to restore clean air we’ll discuss.

If you’re wondering if your house is an issue, ask yourself, “Does the range hood vent outdoors? Is there visible moisture or a musty smell? Does anyone smoke inside? Is the furnace filter overdue? Do symptoms improve when we leave home or work?”

Those questions sometimes reveal more than another round of supplements.

It Pays to Do This (If You Can)

When air quality is compromised, it’s best to see how you can remediate. Typically, the most useful integrative strategy is reducing the exposure.

The body can’t “detox” faster than smoke keeps arriving.

For starters, you can check  AirNow in the United States or the Air Quality Health Index in Canada before outdoor exercise, yard work, or a long commute.

Keep in mind conditions can shift considerably during the day. Moving a walk or workout to a cleaner period isn’t giving up on exercise. It’s just being smart. 

During a smoke event, close windows and doors and set the central air to recirculate. Use the highest-efficiency HVAC filter the system can safely handle, often MERV 13 (this is honestly one of the best and most affordable options), when compatible.

You could also use a portable HEPA cleaner that is appropriately sized for the room and allowed to run consistently. These are quite affordable now compared to just a few years ago.

In a randomized crossover trial involving older adults, three days of portable filtration reduced personal PM2.5 exposure and systolic blood pressure.

That doesn’t make a purifier a treatment for hypertension, but it does provide human clinical evidence that lowering indoor particle exposure can create measurable biological changes. 

A bedroom or main living area can become a cleaner-air room.

Avoid adding more particles by burning candles or incense, smoking, vacuuming without HEPA filtration, or doing prolonged high-heat cooking while outdoor smoke is heavy.

And when outdoor conditions improve, air out the home.

Ventilation and filtration need to work like a tide gate during a wildfire: close against the dirty air, then open when a cleaner window arrives.

For households that can’t afford a commercial purifier, EPA guidance includes properly constructed box-fan filters as a lower-cost option. The unit still needs to be used safely and matched to the room.

If things are really bad and you’re sensitive to particulates, a snugly fitted, NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator can reduce exposure to fine smoke particles. Bandanas, cloth face coverings, and loose surgical masks don’t offer the same protection. People with heart or lung conditions may need to discuss respirator use with their clinician. 

And of course, sleep, hydration, regular meals, and a diet centered on minimally processed foods support the body’s normal repair and antioxidant systems. They’re worthwhile foundations, but they don’t neutralize PM2.5.

Another option is saline nasal sprays, as rinsing may soothe a dry, irritated nose. Showering and changing clothes can remove particles from the skin and hair after time outdoors. 

I’m cautious with products marketed as smoke detoxes. The clinical evidence is weak, and those products can distract people from filtration, respirators, medication plans, and actual source control.

Patients with asthma or COPD should keep prescribed controller and rescue medications available and follow their treatment plans. Air filtration can support that care, but it doesn’t replace it.

Chest pain, significant wheezing, severe coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness, or an asthma attack warrants medical attention. A suspected heart attack, stroke, or other emergency requires immediate care. (Official Health Canada page)

A Better Way to Think About Clean Air

Look, clean air isn’t a wellness luxury, and sadly, it’s something we ALL have to deal with.

The practical approach is layered: monitor local air quality, reduce exposure, clean one’s indoor space well, remove indoor pollution sources, protect the lungs when outside, and keep existing medical conditions properly treated. Then address the recurring building problems: poor ventilation, moisture, combustion, smoke, or inadequate filtration.

We can’t control the wind or stop every wildfire, as much as I wish we could.

However, we can make exposure less passive. Small environmental changes, repeated consistently, often give the body more room to do what it’s already trying to do: breathe, regulate inflammation, and recover.
