Guess What Scientists Just Discovered about Fish Oil

Scientists are constantly researching how the supplements we take affect our health.

I think this is a good thing, especially as the FDA doesn’t regulate supplement sales and it’s important that people are able to make decisions about supplements based on real evidence.

That being said, there can be conflicting evidence surrounding supplements and their effectiveness.

That’s why you’ll never hear me claim that X supplement will cure anything.

I do that for two reasons.

The first is claiming supplements cure anything is forbidden by the FDA.

And the second, for the most part, I don’t believe supplements cure anything (there are exceptions that I could talk about in the office with you if you’re a patient)...

However, I do believe they help to modulate health, and that helps to influence how your body works so it can begin to heal.

The reason I mention all of this before talking about fish oil?

Because what researchers just discovered about fish oil won’t necessarily cure anything… but this discovery definitely is exciting because it shows that taking fish oil is one of the best things you could ever do to keep your body in tip top shape.

Yes, Fish Oil Really Can Help Keep You Healthy In this Amazing Way! 

For years I’ve been recommending fish oil because I believe the omega-3 fats we find in fish oil are some of the best for helping to aid in cell function, keep the cardiovascular system healthy, as well as promote cognitive health.

Another reason I’ve recommended it (and decided to carry it as a Health As It Ought To Be product) is because of how it supports our body’s inflammatory response.

Remember, if there’s inflammation in your body, that’s not a terrible thing.

Inflammation is the body’s internal healing system, and is the mass mobilization of white blood cells and other helper cells that localize at the site of injury.

But, like anything, there’s such a thing as too much inflammation.

Which is why it’s always a good idea to help support your body’s inflammatory response with items that balance out inflammation.

Like taking fish oil.

Think of it this way.

You need food to survive.

But, you can also overeat, which is why it’s helpful to exercise and eat well since these activities curb an overactive appetite.

In the instance of taking fish oil, the omega-3 fats in fish oil act like exercise and eating well on inflammation.

Recent research shows that taking fish oil helps to cause the release of anti-inflammatory molecules known as specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs). SPMs are known to help support the body’s response to inflammation so it doesn’t move into a state of poor health.

In this study, scientists at the William Harvey Research Institute at Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom effectively demonstrated how enriched fish oil supplements quelled inflammation by causing the release of SPMs.

To reach these findings they took 22 people whose ages ranged from 19- 37 years old and asked half to take a placebo and the other half to take fish oil. Since the study was a double-blind placebo controlled study neither group was aware of what they were getting.

Before the subjects took their supplements a baseline blood test was performed. Then, they took their supplement and the test subjects blood was measured five times (at baseline and then 2, 4, 6, and 24 hours ) to compare it to their baseline.

After analyzing the samples “The researchers found that taking the enriched fish oil supplement raised blood levels of SPMs. The results showed a ‘time and dose-dependent’ increase in circulating blood levels of SPMs.”

Essentially, that means that the fish oil caused the release of molecules that can help the body deal with inflammation more effectively, thus helping to maintain amazing health.

Studies like this serve to reinforce my positive opinion on fish oil supplements.

I recommend everyone take a fish oil supplement since they’re great at helping you get
additional omega-3 (DHA/EPA).

Over the course of a few weeks to months of taking fish oil you should feel better and many of your body’s vital systems will be protected.
