Answered - Serious Questions about Our New Breast Scan

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve talked about breast cancer risk, breast density, supplemental imaging, and why we invested in QT Breast Acoustic Ultrasound.

Now I want to make this much more practical. As I’m sure many of you are wondering about what happens when you come into our new imaging center…and what it’s actually like to get one of these scans?

From what we’ve learned by talking to patients, that matters just as much as the technology.

What Happens When You Come In?

If you’ve been following along with these emails, remember, a QT scan is a three-dimensional ultrasound examination of the breast. It uses sound waves rather than X-rays, and the breast is imaged while the patient lies face-down with the breast suspended in warm water.

So that means there’s no breast compression…there’s no ionizing radiation and, thankfully, no contrast injection either.

For women who have spent years dreading breast imaging appointments, that can make this a very different experience.

At Robinhood Imaging, the appointment is intentionally simple.

You’ll change into a robe and then lie face-down on the QT examination table. You position one breast in the scanning area and lower it into a warm water bath.

Then the machine does the work.

The ultrasound arrays rotate around the breast and move through the tissue from different positions. Instead of someone manually sweeping a handheld ultrasound probe back and forth, the system automates and standardizes the acquisition.

The FDA describes the QT Scanner as an automated, software-controlled ultrasound system that performs a whole-breast scan using both reflection and transmission ultrasound. It generates images in multiple planes and also calculates fibroglandular breast volume and the proportion of fibroglandular tissue within the breast.

That means the scanner gathers information from all around the breast and reconstructs it into a detailed three-dimensional dataset a radiologist can review.

Robinhood patients who have gone through the process describe roughly 13 minutes of scanning per breast, while QT Imaging says the scan itself typically takes around 10–12 minutes per breast.

My Personal Take On the Technology

Obviously I’ll never use the QT scan, personally.

That doesn't mean I can’t have an opinion on how it would feel to use it.

What sold me on it (and why I wanted to offer it to people in the area) is that it's one of the most pleasant ways to get accurate imaging.

And then there’s the 3D imaging component as well.

Because the scanner gathers information throughout the entire breast and produces coronal, axial, and sagittal images for review…and also provides quantitative information about fibroglandular tissue (which helps overcome challenges related to breast density) we get a really full picture of breast health.

I don’t think every woman needs every available medical test.

More testing isn’t automatically better medicine.

But for some women, this conversation makes a lot of sense.

That may include women with dense breasts, women who have been told they need additional breast imaging, women who expect to undergo repeated monitoring, or women who simply want to understand whether a compression-free and radiation-free supplemental imaging option could fit into their breast-health plan.

QT’s manufacturer describes the technology as particularly relevant to supplemental breast imaging and dense breast tissue.

There is one boundary I want to keep very clear.

The FDA indication specifically states that the QT Scanner is not intended to replace screening mammography.

So I’m not telling a woman to ignore a mammogram her healthcare provider recommended.

What I am saying is that women have more imaging technology available to them than many realize, and I think they deserve to understand those options.

We Built Robinhood Imaging Around “The Experience”

We created Robinhood Imaging because we wanted the technology and the environment around it to match.

Breast imaging is stressful enough for some women already. The last thing the experience needs is to feel rushed, confusing, or impersonal.

Robinhood Imaging is open to everyone. You do not have to be a Robinhood Integrative Health patient.

Appointments are currently available at:

3283 Robinhood Road
Winston-Salem, NC 27106
336.306.8649 (please call)

And because I know cost is part of the decision, Robinhood Imaging currently publishes its prices rather than leaving patients wondering what the bill will be.

As of September 2026, we are still running our introductory pricing of $600 for Robinhood Integrative Health patients and $625 for non-patients. The center does not bill insurance, and pricing will likely increase in the future, so it’s worth getting scheduled sooner rather than later.  To check current pricing, you can go here: Robinhood Imaging)

Here’s the Final Word On This

I’ve spent a lot of time in this series talking about prevention, risk, and better information.

At some point, though, information only becomes useful when we actually go get it.

Remember, QT Breast Acoustic CT gives you access to detailed, whole-breast 3D ultrasound imaging without compression, ionizing radiation, or injected contrast.

Which isn’t something you’re going to get anywhere else…you’ll definitely have to put up with those aspects of imaging in other circumstances.

For the right woman, I think that could make a difference.

And now that Robinhood Imaging is open to the public, you don’t need to be my patient to take advantage of it.

If you’ve been curious about QT Imaging, have dense breast tissue, need supplemental imaging, or simply want to find out whether this technology makes sense for you, call Robinhood Imaging and talk with the team.
