Part 3
With this email I’ll finish up my 3-part series on Detoxing.
So far, you’ve learned about the importance of detoxing as well as the effects that toxins have on your body.
You’ve also learned that toxins are all over the place. Not to be overly-dramatic, but it’s true. As you read, they’re often in the food you eat. For instance, mercury in tuna and hormones in beef. Or they’re in the air you breath, thanks to the big diesel trucks that throws tons of pollution into the air.
You even discovered a link between your mental and spiritual health and a production of toxins inside of your body.
Suffice to say, you’ve digested a great deal of information on toxins, and not all of it was that encouraging.
At the end of the day, the reason I’ve written this series is because I want you to know about the risks toxins pose, as well as the incredible ease in which you can eradicate toxins from your life.
Not only do I want you to experience better health, I want you to see how easy and straightforward it can be.
Begin Your Detox Today
To detox properly, you need to do things differently than you did yesterday.
Keep in mind, and a detox doesn’t have to happen all at once.
There’s no need to shock your system and try all of these steps as soon as you read them.
My recommendation is to slowly incorporate these practices into your life, as you do, you’ll begin to feel better as your you begin to expel the toxins built up in your body.
1. Relax: Yes, the doctor is telling you to relax. So, RELAX! You can try various forms of relaxation. It could be deep tissue massage, prolonged stretching, prayer, quiet times, just sitting in a comfortable chair as you tune out stress and worries. Relaxing is something you actively do, so, do not neglect this important means of purging toxins from your body.
2. Poop More: Since I’m a doctor, I find myself talking about poop more than I thought I would even when I was an immature teenager. As I mentioned in the previous email, fixing gut issues is an essential part of purifying your body. In an ideal world, you should take at least one bowel movement a day, if not two or three.
If you are going longer than 24 hours between bowel movements then you need to adjust as soon as you can. Not to be gross, but have you ever been in a dirty porta-potty in the middle of the summer? When you don’t have frequent bowel movements, that’s what happens in your guy. Pretty disgusting, right? If you’re having trouble getting regular, you’ve likely heard you should add fiber.
That’s a great start
You can also consider using a multi-strain probiotic to balance out gut bacteria and, in a pinch, extra magnesium citrate can help things get moving.
CAUTION: If you’re suffering from a chronic diseases or have other medical problems, it’s important you consult with a doctor before taking supplements like magnesium. I also recommend against using products like Miralax and other chemical induced laxatives.
3. Don’t Do Drugs: I’m not just talking about illegal ones here. You should avoid excessive use of caffeine, under 200 mg a day (two cups of coffee) is a good balance if you must have caffeine. Don’t take sedatives, stimulants, nicotine, alcohol and even many of the over-the-counter products you take, as all of these can increase toxicity in your body.
4. Drink Up: I encourage you to remain properly hydrated. Aim for at least 64 ounces of water a day, more is better, especially if you live an active lifestyle. While you’re at it, drink filtered water whenever possible. Unfiltered tap water has a propensity to carry toxins.
To take it a step further, spring water from a natural source or reverse osmosis water are also great ways to remove many of the trace toxins from your drinking water.
5. Get Rid of The Standard American Diet: That’s the first place to start: As best you can (and remember, this is a process) get rid of gluten, soy, dairy, anything that is processed in any shape or form. This includes all kinds of sugar, especially white sugar.
Also, eat organic whenever possible. This means organic produce and meat. This way your food has the least amount of toxins possible and the threat of dealing with unwanted hormones and antibiotics is eliminated.
6. Detoxify With Food: I know, some of you might balk at this one, but it’s so important. Try to eat around 8-10 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables every day. Focus on veggies like broccoli, collards, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, along with garlic and onions, which help increase sulfur in the body and help detoxification.
7. Exercise: Yes, you always hear it, and it’s such an important part of staying healthy. When you work to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, you’re also helping to move blood around your body.
Blood not only carries oxygen to your muscles, it transports white blood cells which help to fight off infection and reduce the burden of toxicity in your body. Exercise can help you achieve mental and emotional balance too, which will help ward off the accumulation of toxins in your body.
8. Just Sweat: One of the primary purposes of sweating is to bring toxins out of your body through your skin. So do it, and do it often. Good options are sauna, steam, or a detox bath. Make sure you’re healthy enough to use saunas or steam rooms. If you have a heart condition, talk to a physician first.
9. Add Supplements: Supplements are a wonderful way to help with the detox process, and there are many herbs in nature that can help boost the process of detoxification tenfold.
A few supplements to consider are:
- Milk Thistle: This herb supports liver health and can give your live a chance to detox with more efficiency.
- Dandelion root: This herb also helps to support liver health.
- Licorice root: This herb can stimulate the production of bile and also provides the kidneys with some much needed therapy.
- Turmeric: Not only does turmeric help reduce inflammation, it will also help activate bile production. Plus, it promote healthy digestion and purifies the blood.
When it comes to supplements, the list goes on for a while.
Fortunately for you, we’ll be exploring the role of supplements in detail in upcoming articles. But, I'll go on the record saying that adding herbal supplements and certain micronutrients can really help push more toxins out of your body.
